A Trade Completed

Now that I'm getting back into the sorting and working on the Expos project, I've been more active on TCDB with trades. 

I received one package in today from sportzcommish. 

A couple 1971s 

The Day is the airbrushed variation. The other card has a bank of lights behind Day's ear. 

Gene Mauch. 

Some nice 1974s. I needed the Marshall/Hiller for my Canadians collection, since Hiller is from Toronto. 

Some 1975s including a Dave Pagan. Pagan is a Canadian as well. He's from Nipawin, Saskatchewan. 

Some later Expos as well here with a couple Walkers as a Rockie and Erik Bedard.

A Single Card Post

I recently came across a deal I couldn't resist.. 

A Robin Yount Rookie. It was $20 CDN total.. $17 plus $3 shipping. Found it on Facebook Marketplace through the First Row Collectibles FB Group. 

Now. It really doesn't fit in my collection.. And the corners are a little rough. But I looked at the listing something like 16 times before deciding to pull the trigger. 

But what's this?? It's an O Pee Chee version! 

I don't know how long this will actually stay in my collection.. I may end up sending this to a Brewers collector.. 

I just couldn't pass this up.. 

So.. 

I have a question for you.

Have you ever bought/traded for a card that didn't fit your collection just because the pull was too great??

1991 Score

Well, one thing I'm enjoying about this Million Expos Project and the Great Sort right now is finding out that I'm, in some cases, one card from finishing a set. 

I ordered the checklist I needed from 1992 Donruss to complete that, aside from a couple inserts I want to complete as well.. (Why, oh why did you have to put an Update set as a random insertion for retail factory sets Donruss?? Especially when you give like 6 cards in it.. Were you expecting people to purchase multiples to get the full Update set??) 

Sorry.. Bit of a rant.. Yes, Donruss did indeed produce an Update set.. It was 22 cards. They randomly inserted 6 cards into each retail (red box) factory Set.. The Hobby (Blue) got Leaf prevew cards. 

Now... Because of that.. The average cost of a Donruss Update card is $10+ 

Otherwise, I believe I just need some Diamond Kings to complete 1992.. 

But enough about that.. I'll get to that eventually.. Today I want to mention 1991 Score.. 

I'm one card away from completing the master set.. I just need one card.. 

Scott Chiamparino. Error Card... 

Says he bats left.. 

I haven't been able to find any online for sale. 

Speaking of 1991 Score. I did come across a couple cards I thought were interesting. 

The first is Greg Harris. The journeyman pitcher. Here he is throwing a bullpen session for the Red Sox.. Left handed.. 

He's right handed.. 

Actually he's ambidextrous. He'd throw left handed in the bullpen just to keep is sharp. The Red Sox never let him use it in a game, but he did end up pitching left handed in a game with the Expos..

And here it is.. Catching is Joe Siddall.. 

I don't know why.. I just love the expression on Bell's face here. I'm not sure if he's watching a long drive hit into the 500 level at SkyDome here, or if he's trying to will the ball fair.. My guess is the latter, but it's still a cool picture. 

Finally, we have Doug Dascenzo. I'm guessing the picture was taken in a game where the Cubs got blown out in order to see Dascenzo on the mound. 

Taking a quick look at his Baseball Reference Page, he pitched in 1990 and in 1991. 1 IP in 1990, 4 IP in three games in 1991.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a few cards I thought were fun from 1991 Score. And.. If you have a Chiamparino error card you're willing to part with.. Let me know please!!!

Rockford Expos

The other minor league set that was in that P-Town Tom package was the 1988 Rockford Expos.

Rockford Illinois was the home of the Rockford Expos from 1988-1992. The Royals, Cubs, and Reds then moved in there. Until 1999 Rockford was part of the Midwest League. Now it's got an Independent Ball team in the Frontier League.

But I'm here to talk about the 1988 Rockford Expos.. Because that's the set of cards I have..

I recognize Cianfrocco and Colbrunn. 

I just want to make a mention quickly about that logo.. 

That was the logo they used at least for the first year.. The hat logo, according to these photos, was the Rockford Expos name spelled out. 

I believe later years they went to this:

Delino! Howard Farmer. 

I wonder if Rob Kerrigan was at all related to Joe.. I find relations aren't listed for players if they never reach the majors. 

Nate Minchey. For some reason, I only remember him as a member of the Red Sox. 

All in all, not many people who make the Majors here, but that's to be expected for A-ball.. 

I really like the design of the cards. 

I believe they were put out by either Rockford Magazine or Rockford Litho Center..

I hope you enjoyed taking a look at this set.. It certainly helped get the Expos numbers up.

Jacksonville Expos

Well, one thing that I want to cover today is Minor League Expos Cards

In the box of stuff I got from P-Town Tom was a couple team packs of MiLB Expos.. 

I'll show off one of those today

One thing about minoe league sets is seeing trainers and coaches getting cards. 

Some recognizable names in here too with Howard Farmer, Mel Rojas.

Archi Cianfrocco (Spelled Archie on the card) apparently has a card with Archi out there, but I have an Error unknown to the TCDB.. 

John Vander Wal made the majors as an outfielder. 

Kent Bottenfield had a decent career as well

Bob Natal, I remember being on the Marlins in 1993.. 

The two big names were missing from the set, in DeShields and Grissom.

In any event, these are going to be added to my Project. Tomorrow I'll likely look at the other set I received from Tom.. 

Expos..

Well, one thing I knew would happen when I first undertook this Million Expos project was finding and receiving cards I probably otherwise wouldn't have.. 

Recently I got a box in the mail from Team Collectors member Matt. We also talk on Twitter a bit. He collects Brewers, I collect Jays and Expos.. 

Well, I've been doing some cataloguing and decided to add the cards up till 1990 that he sent me.. I still have some others I need to catalogue, but those will be done as I go through those years.. 

I wanted to highlight a few cards I got from him

Score jumped into the insert and oddball sets right off the hop. Their first set was 1988 and in 1989 they had oddball sets like 100 Rising Stars and Superstars. 

I only need Randy Johnson to complete the Expos portion of the 1989 Rising Stars..

The 1984 OPC Bryan Little was the bane of my collecting existence for a while. I thought I had the two copies I needed (One for set, one for team) but I missed the team.. I finally have it, but the Topps card reminded me of that. 

Ellis Valentine and Chip Lang from 1977. Aren't they beautiful cards?

1975 is one of those years I honestly never expect to see in trades, yet I have some coming soon. I rarely expect to see anything before 1986, for some reason.. Maybe it's my warped valuation system.. Or maybe it's that I don't believe other people are willing to part with these. 

Anyway. Larry Biittner and Willie Davis make appearances.. 

Finally a Ken Singleton card from 1973.. And what's this?? Either someone time travelled and scribbled on the card with Sharpie in 1973, or this is a signed card... 

This was a very pleasant surprise..

A Million Expos Update

It's been a while since I've done one of these, so I figured I'd do a quick update on the Million Expos Project

I originally wanted to wait until I finished 1990 in my sort.. But I'm slogging through it very slowly. Still need to do Fleer and Upper Deck and any oddball cards to complete 1990. Oh and Leaf... 

So where am I standing at with my Expos count??

I, like I said, still need to enter Fleer and Upper Deck for 1990, so that number will be higher when I'm done. 

All in all though, that's pretty good so far.. 

I recently got a bunch of Expos cards from someone on Twitter, starting with 1972 up to 1991. I still have two minor league team sets to add as well. I might actually make a post out of those once I clear my scanner. The Rockford Expos cards are rather beautiful.. 

This was one of the recent acquisitions. I believe the picture was taken with Taylor as a Met. You can see the pinstripes on the uni and the cap logo looks painted on. 

The reason I chose this card is the fact he's Canadian. 

This is currently the card with the highest population in this project.. I have 32 copies of it. I know to get to one million I'm going to need quite a few more copies of a bunch of cards. (Hooray for the overproduction era!!!) 

That all being said.. If you have Expos cards you're looking to find a home for, let me know.. I imagine we'd be able to work something out. Be it bulk team trade or whatever. 

Back in the early days when it seemed there were more than just me and One Million Cubs, I had all my Yankees cards pulled aside. I also had a bunch of Dodgers put aside for whatever reason.
