A Side Project For the Million Expos

Well. Since I've set the goal to collect one million Expos cards, I thought why not add a little fun to it.. 

So while my internet was down tonight, I finished a sorting of Expos to go into a Frankenset. 

Now, these are my rules:

Any brand, any year. I excluded most food issues or insert sets (IE: 14 of 50) though I did use the 25th Anniversary Expos Donruss set a fair bit. 

In cases where I had more than one card with the same number, I based on a quick gut feeling. Some were easy, like Gary Carter vs Gary Lucas, or Andre Dawson vs Floyd Youmans. Some were sentimental. Some I based solely on the photo used. It was all over the place.. 

Once I get it Sleeved and Bindered, I'll probably show some of the sheets on here. 

Speaking of the Million Expos Project... 

I finished 1994.. 

I am at 7246 Expos cards, including a fair number of Ted Williams Cliff Floyd cards. 

Just wanted to give a quick update here. 

Beginning of July

Yesterday was Canada Day.. I wanted to do a post yesterday but I woke up with a migraine and was away from the computer all day.. 

I would have basically done a similar post to this one I did in 2017 

I am feeling better today though so I wanted to come on and say I haven't disappeared. Just been dealing with a lot of mental health issues again.. Suicidal thoughts are never fun.. 

Anyway.. Even through that I've been plugging away at my sorting and have a trade to talk about. 

Fellow Canadian blogger CrazieJoe and I made a small trade. I received the cards today..

Rhoden for the 1986 set. Grissom and Jones fill some Expos.. 

The Joyner and Davis MVP cards will help with the 89 Donruss set.. 

I've mentioned before I love minor league cards.. So I have a few here. Garret Anderson, Mike Kelly, and Scott Tedder.. 

Tedder never made the majors.. He actually played in the minor league systems of both Chicago teams. Kelly and Anderson did both make it..

A Purchase

I made a purchase on Twitter from Jenny's Baseball Cards, @JennyMiller521

I've made purchases from her before and never had a problem. This time there was a little delay in receiving because of an address issue, but since those things happen, I wasn't worried. Let's look at what I got!

She had some cards from the 70s this time around, so I saw Expos and pounced. Anything to help with my Million Expos.. The top 5 cards in this image were needs, the others are Project Needs. 

I love minor league cards. Absolutely love them. A bunch of Myrtle Beach Blue Jays cards here. 

Barry Foote played for the Expos in the 70s, managed in the Jays system in the 80s. 

It's odd being Patrick Hentgen. 

Vince Horsman is Canadian. 

Lindsay Foster ended up playing for the Thunder Bay Whiskey Jacks in 1994. 

We also have some James Paxton cards. 

I believe the last 5 cards in this picture are the extras she threw in because of an issue we had with delivery.

A Couple Trades

I want to do some trade housekeeping right now.. 

I've received a couple packages in the mail recently from the TCDB and a couple purchases I've made.. 

First is a trade from TCDB member Shaggy69. 

A bunch of 2004 Jays and Expos.. 2004 was a down time for me in the collecting game.. I was in Bridgenorth, just outside town.. I very rarely left Bridgenorth to come into town and as a result, rarely got to buy cards. 

There are some names here I enjoy seeing though.. Delgado.. Halladay.. Cabrera..

I may have mentioned it here before, but my only memory of Catalanotto in a Jays uniform is grounding out to second.. I do that on The Show and I call it a Catalanotto Special.. 

The next is from TCDB member MMehler. 

Aside from Shannon Stewart and Doc, we have a lot of Canadians.. 

Two Matt Stairs cards, even..

Now, the pickups I had.. 

First, I bought Set 22 of the Throwback Thursday cards from Topps.. I'm not really a fan of the On Demand/Online exclusive cards and will usually stay away from them.. But I've had to get a couple..

The first one was the Jays/Expos one they did a few months ago.. This one I picked up because half the checklist is Jays.. 

Of course, yet another Vlad Jr card.. 

Cavan Biggio is a nice get too.. 

I kind of miss the 1992 uniforms

The final purchase was another from First Row Collectibles. 

I bought the 1992 Jays Fire Safety cards here. Curtis threw in the other cards here as a surprise. I rather like the Pillar, though it looks different in hand than it does here. 

I'm two cards away from finishing the Fire Safety set for 1992, and Curtis actually found the two I needed and is sending them to me.

One Million Expos: Post 1992 Update

I just finished 1992 in my Great Sort. 

At current time, I'm sitting at 6192 Expos cards. 

I still have the rest of the 1990s and 2000s to go through.

I've also decided to start another project.. 

An Expos Frankenset. Probably looking to go to 792, though I may have better luck going to 660 or something like that.. We'll see.. 

I'll be using all brands, all years, including oddballs. This Frankenset will be truly bits and pieces of everything. 

As I get through this, I'll be keeping updates of course.. 

I have a couple trades to go over also, but those will likely be this weekend. 

And I have a couple things I may want to see about selling/trading.. 

A Trade Post

Since I've been working on The Great Sort, I've been more active on TCDB as well, including updating my trade list as I go through year by year.. 

I recently received a trade from jmiller4 and I want to show it off today..

Some nice early Expos here.

Reggie Cleveland was a nice get as well. 

I was confused as to why I got the John Balaz card, but then I turned it over.. I didn't realize he was a Canadian.. He ended up playing a grand total of 59 games in the Majors, all with California. 

We also have a Dave McKay sighting here. 

Some 1989 Topps Traded and some Stadium Club. 

Ahh Topps Total.. How I wish you were the way you were and not the bastardization you've become.. 

An odd sight.. Tulo on the bench in uniform. Seems his current best position is the Injured List.

And finally, this Galarraga card.. 

I also got a couple cards in the mail from Fellow Team Collector Matthew. He collects Brewers.. 

After I showed my purchase of the OPC Yount rookie, he messaged me with an offer I couldn't really turn down.. 

About the only way I ever get Bowman cards is through trades.. I never buy them, though I do like the fact these have borders on them.. 

But this wasn't what got me to agree to move the Yount..

There were a fair number of them so I broke it into two parts.. Here's part two!

1992 represented Davis' second stint with the O's

How: Traded with Willie Greene and Dave Martinez for Bill Risley and John Wetteland

I really miss those old Expos uniforms.

How: Signed as a free agent.

Was the Jays' first 20 game winner. 

How: Traded with Bret Saberhagen to the Mets

He played one season with the Mets before finishing his career with two seasons in Atlanta.

How: Traded for Ken Hill

1991 was a horrible year for Galarraga, and with prospects at First Base, the Expos traded for pitching. Of course, we know Andres had a revival in Colorado.

How: Part of the Von Hayes trade

He is, of course, better known as being the GM of the Phillies. 

How: Signed as a Free Agent

Morgan pitched for 12 teams over his career, including the Jays. 

How: Signed as a Free Agent.

He was born in Kapuskasing Ontario. He was drafted in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft as well, playing for the Jets farm team. 

How: Traded for Dale Sveum

His son, Chance, pitched in the Majors from 2011-2014. 

How: Part of the Scott Ruskin trade

Those white uniforms with the racing stripes were great.

How: Signed as a free agent

He played until 2000 but I don't remember this guy.

How: Selected on waivers

He was released in Spring Training by the Reds. He signed in April of 1992 with Boston.

How: Signed as a Free Agent

He played Three Games for the Twins in 1992

How: Traded for Darrin Fletcher

How: Traded with Eric Davis for Tim Belcher and John Wetteland

He spent from 1994-1998 in Japan, playing for the Nippon Ham Fighters

How: Signed as a Free Agent

He was released by the Angels in May and finished the season with the Phillies. 

How: Part of the Bill Swift trade

It was rather interesting seeing a Michael Jackson playing baseball at the same time as a Michael Jackson was releasing music. 

How: Part of the Kenny Lofton trade

I remember him more as an Astro anyway 

How: Traded for Dave Gallagher

Hubie was an Expo at one time. By time I got into baseball, he was an Angel.

How: Traded for Bruce Ruffin

I always had fun trying to figure out how to say his name until I actually heard it. 

How: Traded for Domingo Mota and Chris Gwynn

Honestly, those Royals uniforms are rather nice as well..
