1988 CMC Columbus Clippers

 Today is another in the 1988 CMC line..

The Columbus Clippers. 

They were the 1987 Governor's Cup Champions. 

In 1988 they went 65-77

So who was on this team??


Alvaro Espinoza played in the Majors for Minnesota (84-86), The Yankees (88-91), Indians (93-96), Mets (96), and Mariners (97) 
Overall, he played for Houston (79-80), Minnesota (82-87), Yankees (88-91), Cleveland (92-96), Mets (96), and Seattle (97)

Berto Pena played in the Majors for Houston from 1981-1987
Overall, he spent time with Houston (77-87) and New York (88)

Bill Fulton played three games for the Yankees in 1987 as his only Major League Experience. 
He spent his entire career (83-89) in the Yankees organization. 

Bob Geren played in the Majors for the Yankees (88-91) and the Padres (93)
Overall, he played for the Padres (79-80, 93), Cardinals (81-85), Yankees (86-91), and Red Sox (92) organizations.

Casey Close never made it to the Majors.. (Close.. But no cigar??) 
He played for the Yankees (86-88) and Mariners (89-90) organizations. 

Chris Alvarez never made the Majors. 
He played for the White Sox (85), Yankees (86-89) and Tigers (89-90) organizations. He also spent 1991-1993 in Mexico. 

Clay Parker played in the Majors for the Yankees (89-90), Tigers (90), and Mariners (92)
Overall, he played for the Mariners (85-87), Yankees (88-90), Tigers (90), Athletics (91), Mariners (92) and Brewers (95) systems. 

Cliff Speck spent part of 1986 with the Braves in the Majors. 
Overall, he spent time in the Mets (74-77), Phillies (78-80), Orioles (81-83), White Sox (84-85), Braves (86-87), and Yankees (87-88) organizations. 

Eric Schmidt never made it out of the minors. 
He played for the White Sox (84-85) and Yankees (86-88) organizations

Hal Morris played in the Majors for the Yankees (88-89), Reds (90-97, 99, 00), Royals (98), and Tigers (00)
He made his way to the Reds in a trade for Tim Leary and Van Snider. 

Hipolito Pena spent parts of 1986 and 1987 with the Pirates and part of 1988 with the Yankees in the Majors. 
Overall, he played for the Brewers (81-83), Pirates (84-87), Yankees (88-91), Tigers (92), and Mets (92) organizations. He also spent 1995 and 1996 in the Independent leagues. 

Jamie Nelson played 40 games for the 1983 Seattle Mariners. That was his only MLB experience. 
Overall, he played for the Mets (78-80), Mariners (81-83), Brewers (84-85), Royals (87), Yankees (88), Angels (89), and Twins (90) organizations. He also played in the Independent Leagues in 1994. 

Jay Buhner spent parts of 1987 and 1988 in New York before being traded to the Mariners, where he played from 1988-2001. 



Jeff Moronko played parts of 1984 and 1987 in the Majors with Cleveland and New York respectively. 
He spent time with Cleveland (80-85), Texas (85-86) and New York (87-88)

Matt Harrison didn't make it out of the minors
He spent his entire career (84-88) with the Yankees 

Mike Kinnuenen played parts of 1980 (Minnesota) and 1986-1987 (Baltimore) in the Majors.
Overall, he played for Minnesota (79-81), St Louis (82), Montreal (83-84), Kansas City (85), Baltimore (86-87), New York (88), Los Angeles (89), and Milwaukee (89) organizations. 

Pat Clements played for California (85), Pittsburgh (85-86), New York (87-88), San Diego (89-92) and Balitmore (92) in the Majors
He spent his career (83-93) with these organizations. 

Pete Dalena played five games in the Majors for Cleveland in 1989.
Overall, he played for New York (82-88), Cleveland (89), Chicago (90), and Minnesota (90) organizations. 

Randy Velarde played in the Majors for the Yankees (87-95), Angels (96-99), Athletics (99-00), Texas (01), New York (01), and Athletics (02)
Overall, he played for the White Sox (85-86), Yankees (87-95, 01), Angels (96-99), Athletics (99-00, 02), and Rangers (01) organizations.   

Rick Langford actually was a part of the 1988 Clippers as a comeback, it seems. 
He played in the Majors for Pittsburgh (76) and Oakland (77-86) 
He was part of the Pirates organization from 1973-1976, The Athletics from 1977-1986, and showed up in the Clippers in 1988. 

Rob Lambert didn't make it out of the minors. 
He spent his entire career 1985-1988 with the Yankees organization

Scott Neilsen played for the Yankees (86, 88-89) and White Sox (87) in the Majors.
Overall, he spent time in the Mariners (83), Yankees (84-86, 88-89), White Sox (87) and Mets (89-90) organizations 

Steve Shields played in the Majors for Atlanta (85-86), Kansas City (86), Seattle (87), New York (88) and Minnesota (89)
Overall, he spent time in the Red Sox (77-83), Braves (84-86), Royals (86), Mariners (87), Yankees (88), and Twins (89) organizations. 

Turner Ward played in the Majors for Cleveland (90-91), Toronto( 91-93), Milwaukee (94-96), Pittsburgh (97-99) Arizona (99-00) and Philadelphia (01)
He was in the Yankees system from 1986-1988. 

Bucky Dent was the manager of this team. 
He played from 1970-1984 and is a curse in Boston to this day. 
He was a manager or coach from 1985-2007.

    That is a godawful field Columbus is playing on. I'd nearly forgotten about astroturf.

    Casey Close is a major sports agent. One of the only ones I've heard of other than Scott Boras.
