1988 OPC

 Hello friends!

Today is a bit of a departure from the Diamond King box. (One more post from it) Today I want to talk about 1988 OPC. Now, one of the collecting goals I have this year is to maybe transfer from the Junk Topps (1987-1992 in my case) to collecting the OPC sets from those years. I already have 1992 in a factory set so I don't need to worry about it.. (Oddly enough, 1992 is my least favourite from that timeframe)

Anyway. I bring this all up because Stuart from SR75 sent me a box of cards to go along with the money he owed me for a purchase I made for him.

It was a starter set of 1988 OPC. So I went from having just Jays and Expos and really just a smattering at that, to 88% completed.

You remember the old joke from the cartoons where a piece of luggage ends up touring the world and comes back with all sorts of destination stickers? Yeah... I'm thinking this box could have had that. Of course, because of what was inside the box, there was tracking.. I'd check the tracking sometimes and the only thing I'd see for a week is that it was at Usorda, USA.

I found out that's the United States Office of Returns and Dispatch Administration. The hub is at O'Haire airport in Chicago. So it went west to come east..

I guess Stuart was able to see more on his end than I was on mine, since he was telling me it was in Raleigh and some other places before finally making its way to Toronto. Once there, I could see a little more. It arrived today..

I decided to sort through the cards to see what was there and how much of the set I could make. Some of the players being in there surprised me as much as some of the missing players.

I'm thinking in a few months I'll do a Sportlots order to knock the list off..

But yes, I have 350/396, or 402 with duplicates (Jays, Expos, Ducey)

Of course, can't show OPC without the Jays/Expos draft picks from the set.

To go along with the stack of 88s, I also got a big card thing of Rusty Staub and two 1975s.

Thanks Stuart!!

  1. Cool bonus from Stuart. It's hard to say, but I think 1988 was the first year I opened OPC baseball packs.
