1988 CMC Toledo Mud Hens

 Today is the Toledo Mud Hens.

In 1987, they went 70-70

In 1988, they were 58-84

So who was on this team of Tiger Mud Hens?

Benny Ruiz never made it out of the minors. 
He played from 1982-1989, spending all but 1989 with the Tigers organization. He finished with the Indians. 

Billy Bean played in the Majors for the Tigers (87-89), Dodgers (89), and Padres (93-95) 
Overall, he played for the Tigers (86-89), Dodgers (89-91), Angels (92), and Padres (93-95) organizations. He also spent part of 1992 in Japan.
Interestingly, he also seemed to be a teammate of Billy Beane in Toledo. 

Chris Hoiles played in the Majors for Baltimore from 1989-1998
He played for the Tigers from 1986-1988.
He was part of a trade to bring Fred Lynn to Detroit.  

Dave Beard played in the Majors for Oakland (80-83), Seattle (84), Chicago Cubs (85), and Detroit (89)
Overall, he played in the Athletics (77-83), Mariners (84), Cubs (85), Indians (85), Braves (86), and Tigers (88-89) organizations. 

Dave Cooper never made it out of the minor leagues
He played his entire career (85-90) in the Tigers system. 

Don Schulze played in the Majors for the Cubs (83-84), Indians (84-86), Mets (87), Yankees (89), and Padres (89)
Overall, he played for the Cubs (80-84), Indians (84-87), Mets (87), Tigers (88), Yankees (89), Padres (89) and Orioles (93) organizations. 
He also spent 1990-1992 in Japan. 

Donnie Rowland never made it out of the minors. 
He spent his entire career with the Tigers (85-89) 

Doug Strange played in the Majors for Detroit (89), Chicago Cubs (91-92), Texas (93-94), Seattle (95-96), Montreal (97), and Pittsburgh (98)
Overall, he played for the Tigers (85-89), Astros (90), Cubs (90-92), Rangers (93-94), Mariners (95-96), Expos (97), Pirates (98-99), and Braves (00) Organizations. 

Eric King played in the Majors for Detroit from 1986-1988, Chicago White Sox 1989-1990, Cleveland 1991, and Detroit in 1992. 
Overall, he played for the Giants (83-85), Tigers (86-88, 92), White Sox (89-90), and Indians (91) organizations. 
He also played in the Independent Western League in 1998

Jeff Reynolds never made it out of the minor leagues.
He played for the Yankees (80-82), Blue Jays (82-84), Expos (85-87), Tigers (88) and Reds (89) organizations.  

John Duffy did not make it out of the minor leagues.
He played for the Tigers (84-88) and Royals (89) organizations.

Mark Huismann played in the Majors for Kansas City (83-86), Seattle (86-87), Cleveland (87), Detroit (88), Baltimore (89) and Pittsburgh (90-91)
Overall, he played for the Royals (80-86, 91-92), Mariners (86-87), Indians (87), Tigers (88), Orioles (89), and Pirates (90-91) organizations.

Mike Brown played in the Majors for California (83-85, 88) and Pittsburgh (85-86)
Overall, he played for the Angels (80-85, 88-89), Pirates (85-86), Braves (87), White Sox (87), and Tigers (88) organizations. He also spent 1990 in Japan. 

Mike Trujillo played in the Majors for Boston (85-86), Seattle (86-87), and Detroit (88-89) 
Overall, he played for the White Sox (82-84), Red Sox (85-86), Mariners (86-87), Tigers (88-89) and Mets (89) organizations. 

Pat Corrales was the manager of this team. It was his only year managing in the minor leagues.
He spent time in a coaching or managerial capacity from 1976-2009, most notably as part of Bobby Cox' Braves in the 90s. 

Paul Cherry never made it out of the minors. 
He played for the Cardinals (81-87) and Tigers (88) organizations. 

Paul Felix never made it out of the minors.

Rey Palacios played in the Majors for Kansas City from 1988-1990

Roman Pena played 8 games in the Majors for Detroit in 1989.

Tim Leiper did not make it out of the minor leagues. 
He played for the Tigers (85-90, 95), Mets (91, 96), Royals (92), and Pirates (93-94) organizations
He spent some time in Toronto as the First Base coach from 2014-2018
He also, according to Wikipedia, had a hand in Canada's World Baseball Classic teams and as part of the Baseball Canada team that won the Pan Am Gold.

  1. Lots of familiar names on this minor league team set checklist. I imagine seeing Corrales in a 1988 minor league set would have been pretty cool since he was an established MLB manager throughout the 80's and had been featured on several cards.

  2. Corrales managed the Phillies during their pennant-winning 1983 season, but he got fired after 85 games. 43-42.
