1988 CMC Calgary Cannons

Another day, another Triple A Set from 1988 CMC.

This time, the Calgary Cannons of the Pacific Coast League. They went 68-74, good for third in the PCL North. 

At this point, they were an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Who was on this team? 


Bill Plummer was the manager of the team. 
He managed from 1980-2013

Brian Giles played from 1978-1998
He played in the Majors for the Mets from 1981-1983, Milwaukee in 1985, White Sox in 1986 and Seattle in 1990.
Overall, he played in the Mets (78-84), Brewers (85), White Sox (86-87), Mariners (88, 90), and Indians (89) systems.
He also spent time in Mexico (92, 97)
China (93-95)
Independent Leagues (96-98)


Dan Warthen was a coach for the Cannons. 
1988 was his first year as a Pitching Coach. 
He worked right till 2018.

Darren Burroughs played from 1979-1988
He never made the Majors. 
He played in the Phillies (79-83), Padres (84), Reds (85), White Sox (86), and Mariners (87-88) systems. 


Dave Cochrane played from 1982-1992.
He played in the Majors for the White Sox in 1986, and Mariners from 1989-1992.
Overall, he played for the Mets (82-85), White Sox (86-87), and Mariners (88-92) systems. 


Dave Hengel played from 1983-1992
He played in the Majors for the Mariners from 1986-1988, and the Indians in 1989.
Overall, he played for the Mariners (83-88), Indians (89), and Giants (92) systems. 
He also spent two seasons in Japan from 1990-1991. 


Dennis Powell played from 1983-1996
He played in the Majors for Los Angeles (1985-1986), Seattle (1987-1990, 1992-1993), and Milwaukee (1990).
Overall, he played for the Dodgers (83-86), Mariners (87-90, 91-93), Brewers (90), White Sox (94), and Orioles (96)
He also played in Japan (95)


Donell Nixon played from 1981-1993
He played in the Majors for Seattle in 1987, San Francisco in 1988-1989, and Baltimore in 1990. 
Overall, he played in the Mariners (81-88), Giants (88-89), Orioles (90), Indians (91-93) systems. 
Donell is Otis Nixon's brother. 


Doug Merrifield was the trainer for the Cannons. 


Edgar Martinez played from 1983-2004
He spent his entire career with the Mariners system 
He played in the Majors from 1987-2004
He is a member of the Hall of Fame. 


Greg Briley played from 1986-1997
He played in the Majors for Seattle from 1988-1992, and Florida in 1993. 
He played in the Mariners (86-92), Marlins (93), Indians (94), Reds (95), and Tigers (95) systems.
He also spent time in Mexico (94, 97) and Duluth-Superior (96-97)


Jay Baller played from 1979-1994
He played in the Majors for Philadelphia in 1982, 1992, the Cubs in 1985-1987, and Royals in 1990.
Overall, he played in the Phillies (79-82, 91-92), Indians (83-84), Cubs (85-87), Mariners (88), Expos (89), and Royals (90) systems.
He also played in Japan in 1994. 


Jim Walker played from 1984-1988
He never played in the Majors. 
He spent his entire career with the Mariners organization. 


John Christensen played from 1982-1989.
He played in the Majors for the Mets in 1984-1985, Seattle in 1987, and Minnesota in 1988.
Overall, he played in the Mets (82-85), Red Sox (86), Mariners (87-88), and Twins (88-89) organizations



Matt West played from 1981-1988
He never played in the Majors.
He played in the Braves (81-87), and Mariners (88) systems


Mike Christ played from 1984-1988
He never made the Majors. 
He spent his career in the Mariners system. 


Mike Schooler played from 1985-1995
He played in the Majors for Seattle from 1988-1992, and Texas in 1993. 
Overall, he played for the Mariners (85-92), Rangers (93), Padres (94) and Angels (95) systems


Mike Watters played from 1985-1988
He never made the Majors. 
He played in the Dodgers (85-86) and Mariners (87-88) systems. 


Mike Wishnevski played from 1982-1988
He never played in the Majors. 
Overall, he played for the Mariners (82-88) and Giants (88) systems. 


Nelson Simmons played from 1981-2000
He played in the Majors for Detroit in 1984-1985, and Baltimore in 1987
Overall, he played for the Tigers (81-86), Orioles (86-87), Mariners (87-88), Cardinals (89), Athletics (90-91), Brewers (92), Angels (93), and Pirates (95) systems. 
He also played in Mexico in 1989, and 1992-1994
He also played in Independent Ball from 1996-2000 


Paul Schneider played from 1982-1988
He never played in the Majors. 
Overall, he played in the White Sox (82), and Mariners (83-88) systems. 


Phil Ouellette played from 1981-1990
He played in the Majors for San Francisco in 1986
Overall, he played in the Giants (81-87), Mariners (88), Astros (89), and Tigers (90) systems. 


Rich Monteleone played from 1982-1996
He played in the Majors for Seattle in 1987, California in 1988 and 1989, and 1995-1996, Yankees in 1990-1993,  San Francisco in 1994. 
Overall, he played for the Tigers (82-85), Mariners (86-88), Angels (88-90, 95-96), Yankees (90-93),  and Giants (94) systems
He also spent a year in Japan in 1995.



Rod Scurry played from 1974-1988
He played in the Majors for Pittsburgh from 1980-1985, New York Yankees from 1985-1986, and Seattle in 1988. 
Overall, he played in the Pirates (74-85), Yankees (85-86), Giants (87) and Mariners (88) systems. 


Roger Hansen played from 1980-1989
He didn't make the Majors
Overall, he played in the Royals (80-86) and Mariners (87-89) systems. 

That's another team down. 
I must say, I liked the Cannons uniforms shown here, though the hats remind me of the Cubs.

  1. I agree... I remember seeing Calgary Cannons cards from different minor league sets when I was younger and thinking they were an affiliate of the Cubs.

    I'm not sure if anyone else made the obvious joke..but even with Christ on their side, the Cannons still had a losing record.

  4. I found out through 1988 Topps.. They also mention it on the back of his 1990 Donruss card.
