1988 CMC Nashville Sounds

Today's look back is at the Nashville Sounds. 
They were 73-69 in the American Association East, second to the Indianapolis Indians. 
They were an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. 


Dan Boever played from 1983-1989
He didn't play in the Majors.
Overall, he played in the Reds (83-88), Indians (89) and Mariners (89) organizations. 
Interestingly enough he now does Long Drive Competitions and other Golf Events. 


Dave Klipstein played from 1982-1988
He never played in the Majors. 
He played in the Brewers (82-87) and Reds (88) organizations. 


Doug Gwosdz played from 1978-1989
He played in the Majors for San Diego from 1981-1984
Overall, he played for the Padres (78-84), Giants (85), Mets (86), Mariners (87), and Reds (88-89) organizations. 



Greg Monda played from 1983-1988
He didn't play in the Majors
Overall, he played in the Reds (83-88) and Phillies (88) organizations. 


Hugh Kemp played from 1983-1990
He didn't play in the Majors. 
Overall, he played in the Reds (83-89) and Pirates (90) organizations. 


Jack Armstrong played from 1987-2002
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati from 1988-1991, Cleveland in 1992, Florida in 1993 and Texas in 1994
Overall, he played for the Reds (87-91), Indians (92), Marlins (93, 00), and Rangers (94) systems. 
After being out of baseball from 1995-1999, he played for the Marlins in 2000 and for the Atlantic League Newark Bears in 2001-2002. 


Jack Lind was the manager for this team. 
He was employed in some capacity from 1983-2006
He managed in the Angels (83), Reds (84-88) was the Minor League Coordinator for the Pirates from 89-96, The Third Base Coach for the Pirates in 97-99, a Scout for the Astros in 01-02, Giants (03), Mets (04-05) and the Astros again in 06. 


Jeff Gray played from 1984-1991
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati in 1988, and for Boston in 1990 and 1991. 
Overall, he played in the Phillies (84-85), Reds (86-89) and Red Sox (90-91) organizations. 


Joe Oliver played from 1983-2001
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati from 1989-1994 and from 1996-1997, Milwaukee in 1995, Detroit and Seattle in 1998, Pittsburgh in 1999, Seattle in 2000, and Boston and the Yankees in 2001. 
Overall, he played for the Reds (83-94, 96-97), Brewers (95), Tigers (98), Mariners (98, 00), Pirates (99), Devil Rays (99), Red Sox (01), and Yankees (01) organizations. 


John Young was the trainer for the team. 


Lenny Harris played from 1983-2005
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati in 1988 and 1989, Los Angeles from 1989-1993, Cincinnati again from 1994-1998, The Mets in 1998, Arizona in 1999-2000, The Mets again in 2000-2001, Milwaukee in 2002, The Cubs in 2003, and Florida from 2003-2005
Overall, he played for the Reds (83-89, 94-98), Dodgers (89-93), Mets (98, 00-01), Diamondbacks (99-00), Brewers (02), Cubs (03), and Marlins (03-05)

He is probably best known for having the most pinch hits in history with 212. 
I'm not sure if it was for Harris or Dave Hansen, but I remember Lasorda putting pitchers as 3B to start the game in order to give more pinch hit opportunities.. 


Luis Quinones played from 1980-1999
He played in the Majors for Oakland in 1983, San Francisco in 1986, the Cubs in 1987, Cincinnati from 1988-1991, and Minnesota in 1992. 
Overall, he played for San Diego (81-82), Oakland (83), Cleveland (84, 85), San Francisco (85-86), Cubs (87), Cincinnati (88-91), Minnesota (92), Houston(93), and Seattle (93-94) Organizations.
He also played for the independent Grays Harbor Loggers in 1980
He played in Mexico in 1995, China in 1997, and the Atlantic League in 1998 and 1999.


Marty Brown played from 1985-1995
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati in 1988 and 1989, and for Baltimore in 1990 
Overall, he played for the Reds (85-89), Orioles (90), Indians (91), and Rangers (95) organizations. 
He also played in Japan from 1992-1994


Mike Jones played from 1977-1990
He played in the Majors for Kansas City from 1980-1981 and 1984-1985
Overall, he played in the Royals (77-85), Braves (86), Expos (87), Reds (88), and Orioles (89-90) organizations. 


Mike Roesler played from 1985-1993
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati in 1989, and Pittsburgh in 1990.
Overall, he played in the Reds (85-89). Pirates (90-92), and Royals (92-93) organizations. 
He also played in Mexico in 1993 and China in 1994.  


Norm Charlton played from 1984-2001
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati from 1988-1992, and 2000, Seattle in 1993, from 1995-1997, and in 2001, Philadelphia in 1995, Baltimore in 1998, Atlanta in 1998, and Tampa Bay in 1999.
Overall, he played in the Expos (84-85), Reds (86-92, 00), Mariners (93, 95-97, 01), Phillies (95), Orioles (98), Braves (98), and Devil Rays (99) organizations.

I did not know he started in the Expos system..  


Pat Pacillo played from 1985-1990.
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati in 1987 and 1988
Overall, he played in the Reds (85-88), Expos (88-89), and Mariners (90) organizations. 


Rob Dibble played from 1983-1995
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati from 1988-1993, split 1995 between Milwaukee and the White Sox
Overall, he played in the Reds (83-94), Brewers (95), and White Sox (95) systems. 


Rob Lopez played from 1985-1994
He never made the Majors. 
He played in the Reds system (85-91) 
He played on the independent Reno Silver Sox in 1991 and the Independent Beaumont Bullfrogs in 1994. 


Ron Roenicke played from 1977-1989
He played in the Majors for Los Angeles from 1981-1983, Seattle in 1983, San Diego in 1984, San Francisco in 1985, Philadelphia in 1986-1987, and Cincinnati in 1988.
Overall, he played in the Dodgers (77-83), Mariners (83), Padres (84), Giants (85), Phillies (86-87), Reds (88) and Rangers (89) organizations. 


Scott Earl played from 1981-1989
He played in the Majors for Detroit in 1984
Overall, he played in the Tigers (81-87, 89), Reds (88), and Yankees (89) organizations.  


Steve Oliverio played from 1984-1989
He never made the Majors. 
Overall, he played in the Reds (84-88), Blue Jays (88), Mariners (89) and Astros (89) organizations. 


Tim Birtsas played from 1982-1991
He played in the Majors for Oakland in 19985-1986, and Cincinnati from 1988-1990
Overall, he played in the Yankees (82-84), Athletics (85-87), Reds (88-90) organizations. 
He spent 1991 in Japan. 


Van Snider played from 1982-1996
He played in the Majors for Cincinnati in 1988-1989
Overall, he played in the Royals (82-87), Reds (88-89), Yankees (90-91), Red Sox (92), Cardinals (93), and Twins (95) organizations. 
He also played in Mexico from 1994-1996


Wayne Garland was a coach for this team. 
He had played in the Majors from 1973-1981

    Rob Dibble is from Connecticut, my best friend met him once a while back when they were both working in Bristol.

    Ron Roenicke is the interim manager of the Red Sox, after Alex Cora got canned for his garbage can sign stealing in Houston.
