Cards from a Papoy

About a week ago I received a package in the mail from Kevin at The Card Papoy.

We had worked out a trade through e-mail. I found his blog through one of the many others out there, saw some stuff I had he wanted and we worked out a trade.

It's taken this long for me to write about it because I've had zero energy after working. Who'd guess that driving a school bus would be tiring for someone who is drained by being around loud people?? lol Joking aside, I do love the job. Until I get better acclimated to it, though I'm likely only going to be posting once or twice a week.

Anyway, enough rambling.. We're here to see cards!!

The earliest of the batch are from 1994. These are all parallels. I love the look of them, especially the bat flying out of White's hands.

I believe these were from 1998.. The Koch is one of the Bowman International cards. I'm still trying to find a decent setting on my scanner to scan these foil/chrome cards.
The Clemens is also a serial numbered card.

Some 1999 cards. Here we have two cards of a young Roy Halladay and a card of David Wells in his second go-around with the Jays. Unlike his first time, there was no doubt what role he fit.
I had to try to figure out the Wells card, as there's another version. I think the only difference between the two is the other version looks like it was torn from a spiral notebook.

2000!
Now, a small gripe I have with the coloured parallels out there. I'm partially colour blind. I sometimes have difficulty telling certain colours apart. That Batista card, I believe, is the Upper Deck Black Diamond Rookie Edition base set. I say this because the Gold version is a little lighter.

That Mondesi card is my first Topps Gallery card.. I have to say they're nice.

Another Gallery card, this time Vernon Wells. I know this one is harder to read due to foil..

I think Upper Deck is a little young to be putting out vintage designs, but here we go.. Mondesi in a 2002 set going back to their original design.

2003 and we have the 4-3 machine himself, Frank Catalanotto. To this day, whenever I hit a grounder to second on a video game, I call it the Catalanotto Special.

I know he wasn't horrible.. Or even that bad.. I just remember the grounders to second with him.

The Topps 206 cards are weird. I don't get it..

I like the idea behind the Topps Total and the Upper Deck 40 Man sets. In fact, rather than the parallels, variations, parallel variations, and sparkle super short print cards, I'd rather see more players. But that's just me.. I don't need/want 10 cards of Mike Trout.

Does this mean I'm not Topps' target audience??

Some very nice sets here. I kind of like the Turkey Red cards, though again it's yet another throwback set. The Flair Showcase is nice too, though with that name, I'm almost expecting Ric Flair. (WOO!)

Some nice ones here as well.. Again Turkey Red. We have an Allen and Ginter appearance. Some others I don't recall the names of.

Adam Lind as an Outfielder. That is all.

I believe I've said it before.. I'll say it again.. O Pee Chee Cannot be O Pee Chee if it doesn't include French. Simple as that. Upper Deck simply bought the name and put it out as another boring set.

I want my OPC to be accurate! lol

A Travis Snider Topps 206 card. I don't know what it is, but there's something that bothers me about this card..

Remember the mini-rant I had earlier about coloured parallels?? Now we also have a Store-exclusive coloured parallel..

This one is JA Happ in his first go with the Jays.

Stadium Club John Olerud!! And Marcus Stroman. I like the way this chrome card looks, but then again it could also be my scanner settings... Stro looks to be popping out of the card here.

I had to guess on the actual name of this Pillar. There's a red parallel and a red foil parallel. I guessed this one being the red foil based on how others from that set looked.

I do have to say though it makes Pillar stand out from the background. Jose Reyes makes two appearances as well, in Mini and Finest form.

Thank you again Kevin, for the wonderful cards! If you haven't checked him out, give him a gander.

24 on the Two-Four

Today is Victoria Day in Canada, or as it's better known: The May Two-Four. That's also what a case of beer is called here.

Anyway, I figured I'd show off a Two-Four of my own.. 24 cards I just got over the weekend that I enjoy for whatever reason..

First we have some Jays. I forgot the Jayson Werth card was in the MLB Debut inserts so when I saw it I was happy.

Some more MLB Debut cards. I really like the way that insert set looks. Same with the 100 Years of Wrigley Field. The Berger's Best is Meh, but at the same time, seeing a Roberto Clemente is nice.

Three perspectives cards. I like the Ryan card.. The others are not bad.

Now the fun part of this last week is getting everything updated on TCDB.. lol

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

Thorzul!!

So I decided to Pull the Trigger on Thorzul's last haul. So what did I get for $25 ($32 with exchange)?

I got some football cards that, not going to lie, I'm probably going to try to flip as I don't watch or collect Football. I do like the Jamarcus Russell card though.

I pile of WWE cards. It's funny how hit and miss my collection of WWE cards is.. I have a bunch from 1989 then nothing for many years until I got some Chrome cards, and now these. I have to say I'm keeping these. I like them.

1978 cards! 1978 was a good year.. I made my debut on this wonderful rock, The Astros were searing retinas everywhere with their Tequila Sunrise uniforms (I love those unis, by the way) Cito Gaston was still playing, and Dave Kingman bounced around, playing for a team in each division.

I'm almost tempted to say that he's wearing a Mets uniform with a Cubs logo airbrushed onto the cap.

Some other early cards. And a buyback.

I had never heard of this set before I received these from Thorzul. These are... Interesting.. The border is raised slightly from the photo, almost like it's a construction paper cut out glued onto the card. That, coupled with the Descriptor words on the cards make them unique.

A couple more plus a few inserts. The VanLandingham card is a normal sized card, I just didn't notice that the Pujols card wanted to cut in front.

Allen And Ginter. There's something about these I like. It may be the simplicity of a white background with the player on it. I did happen to notice the Rangers in there as well.

Another A&G plus some more inserts. The Inspired Play insert set is interesting to me. I also rather like the Williams coin and the Verlander..

Now.. The main reason I pulled the trigger. There's been a couple times previously that there's been cards I wanted to get in these Pull the Trigger deals that I have had to pass on simply because poor.

I saw that Dawson and I said I must have it.

Mixed in with the A&G cards were two Jays as well. Colby Rasmus and Brandon Morrow. They're definitely going into the Jays Binder!

Again, I just want to say thank you to Thorzul for putting these available for someone to Pull the Trigger. I'm happy I was the one who was able to this time around.

A Delivery from an Owl

I got a wonderful little surprise in the mail a couple days ago.. I had a package dropped off from The Night Owl  and his blog.

One of the sets I'm trying to complete is the 1987 Topps.. Previously, N.O. sent a bunch and promised more were on the way. I completely forgot about that until these showed up on my doorstep.

There were a lot of Royals, Twins, and Brewers in this pile. I have to say I love that BJ Surhoff.. lol
Honestly, when I think Milwaukee Brewers, that uniform is the only one I think of.

Frank Viola without the 'stache!!! Looks odd.. Dennis Boyd as a Red Sox player. I wonder if this would have been before the "Oil Can" nickname..

I love those powder blue uniforms.. The 1980s.. Half the teams wore powder blue..

More Brewers and Twins. Glenn Braggs, who was mentioned a couple days ago on Off Hiatus Cards, makes an appearance here.. In fact, this is his Rookie Card..
Paul Molitor and Gary Gaetti also make appearances here.

I never knew Mark Portugal was a Twin.. I just knew him as an Astro.. Greg Gagne shows up here as well. Kind of funny but at the same time as Gagne being in Minnesota, another Greg Gagne was making a name for himself in the Twin Cities.. I speak, of course, of the AWA wrestler Greg Gagne.

Some big names here.. Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, Robin Yount, Lance Parrish..
Joel Youngblood also makes an appearance.. He's got an interesting story.. In 1982 he played for two teams in two different cities on the same day. He started August 4 as a member of the Mets and ended the day as a member of the Expos.

Well, as of now, I have 633 of the 792 card set. I will be updating the want list for this set tomorrow as I need to get some sleep. Driving a school bus requires alertness.. Who knew?? lol

Mail

It seems as though until I get used to my schedule, I'll be only updating this once a week.

I've gotten a couple packages in the mail that I'm going to go over today

First, a group of 1981 Fleer Expos from mrbenaka from the TCDB.

Now a bunch from TCDB member cabz05 starting with these. I miss the manager cards. I would rather see these than 1600 parallels and variations thrown into a set.

Some 2002 Topps and a couple Upper Deck. Another Manager card, even.. I think the uniforms from this era were my second favourite Jays uniform.

Now my least favourite uniform.. The Angry Bird silver Jay..

Some bad photoshopping here to go along with a Heritage and a John Axford. Axford adds to my Canadians collection.

Some Opening Day and some Archives.. I like the 1980 format but I still hate the 1986..

2015 including a few Opening Day.. I may need to get another Pompey for the Canadians binder.

These cards came in my collecting drought.. I rarely bought cards at that time so it's nice to see them.. At the same time, it's nice that they went with a retro style for the base set, rather than going Archives/Heritage.

And a couple more.

Gustavo Chacin was an interesting character.. He ended up having a cologne made for him in Toronto and was given away at the Dome..

Mike McCoy.. Fun fact: He spent 2014 in Pawtucket and 2015 in El Paso. I don't know where he is now.
